CHAPTER 15

If I thought life would be a lot calmer with Jack gone, I was very sadly mistaken. In fact it got worse. I went from having a husband to having a stalker, and it became very difficult for me to leave the house. Of course I did have to go out, to take Zoe for a walk, to do shopping, and pay bills… etc. But every time I stepped over my doorstep, you can be sure that Jack would appear. He would kerb crawl along the road in his car, and follow me wherever I went. Sometimes he would get out of his car and attack me, and sometimes he would just follow me. He was so unpredictable I never knew what he would do.

While I was at home, he would constantly phone me to let me know that he was watching me. Although I would sound confident when telling him to leave me alone, secretly I was quite unnerved. At first he had access to Hayley, taking her out for the day on Sundays and for two hours, 17.00–19.00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This arrangement seemed to work for a short while. Then one day something occurred in his life, unconnected to me, and the wild streak in his nature raised its ugly head again.

“You’d better make the most of Hayley this week, ‘cos when I take her out on Sunday she won’t be coming back,” he threatened.

“What d’you mean?” I asked wearily.

“I mean, I’m gonna make sure we both die in a car crash. If I can’t have her permanently then neither will you,” he stated. He was clearly unhinged and it was up to me to take action. I didn’t answer him, I just closed the door. I had no idea if he actually meant it. In all probability he didn’t, but I wasn’t taking any chances.

The next day, I sneaked out of the back door early with Hayley, and headed for my solicitors via the back streets, keeping out of sight the best way I could. I was more than a little shaken, and couldn’t hide the desperation in my voice as I related back Jack’s threat to my solicitor, ending with, “So there’s no way I’m handing my daughter over to him on Sunday.”

“It’s ok, Glynis, there’s no need for you to worry. You won’t have to hand her over to him. It’s game over for him.”

I was worried that I didn’t actually have any proof of his threat, but my solicitor assured me that it didn’t matter: a child was involved.

“Oh, thank goodness.”

I slumped back in the chair with relief.

Sunday arrived and Jack rang my doorbell. I was hiding upstairs with Hayley. He kept on ringing and knocking for quite a while and eventually he gave up and disappeared. As soon as the phone rang I knew who it would be on the other end.

“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE PLAYING AT? WHERE’S MY DAUGHTER?” he shouted angrily.

“You didn’t seriously think I would be handing her over after that threat did you?” I said.
